He Says I’m CRAZY! (I call it “Ambitious”!)
I finally dusted off my Wii Fit the other night. :) My favorite workout is running, but it has been raining like crazy here lately, and it shows no sign of letting up til Sunday at the earliest. But that doesn’t mean anything, cuz Monday the weather girl said we’d have a perfect, sunny weekend… lol Now it’s rain through Saturday with a chance Sunday. Ugh… Anyway, so I’ve been at a loss when it comes to finding fun workouts, and remembered I paid like $500 for this Wii and balance board not too long ago, Why not use that.
So when I started the game, it weighed me, and told me how close I was to my goal. I set it at 125, so pretty close but not there yet. (I haven’t played it in a WHILE and I had lost over 10 lbs since last time, but still not at goal.) So I was pretty happy to be so close, BUT I kind of muttered under my breath, “That’s not even my goal anymore anyway.” My husband was sitting on the couch, and he was like, “What are you trying to get down to now? 110?” He said it all sarcastic, like I’d just blow away in the wind of I weighed 110 lbs. I looked at him like he was crazy, and I said, “OMG! No way….” But he could tell by the look on my face that he was close. “115?” He asked. Blank stare from me. “You’re crazy….” he informed me. But I’m telling you guys like I told him, all I want is to be able to look in the mirror, and LIKE what I see! Is that too much to ask? If I were skin and bones, trying to lose more weight, I’d be like, “Yeah, maybe I’m crazy….” But seriously, 115 is not even at the bottom of my recommended healthy weight range. (I’m barely 5′5″) It’s my body fat % I’m more worried about anyway, but that’s harder to explain. He knows that I want heavier weights, and I’m going to get them this weekend.
We were “wrestling” a few nights ago, and I found out that if my husband pins my upper body where I can’t move my arms, I can still get him off of me! :) He was like, “Damn, your legs are getting STOUT!” All that running, lunges, squats, bridges, etc… But if he gets on me where I can’t move my legs, I can’t BUDGE him with my arms. ZERO upper body strength… at least compared to my legs. I definitely plan on working on that over the next several weeks; It was embarrassing.
Oh, here’s the other reason I’m crazy (according to him). Ok, so the town we live in is GHETTO! It’s ridiculous how scary this place is at night, and during the day, it’s not a *whole* lot better. So whenever I’m planning a shopping trip, we ALWAYS go out of town. (I will go to the Wal Mart here if I just need a couple things that I forgot, or something comes up unexpectedly during the week, but I definitely try to get everything elsewhere on the weekends.) So we drove to the next town over to go to Wal Mart, and I had just happened to reset the mileage tracker thing on the dash. It was exactly 27 miles to the Wal Mart there, and when I saw that, I said “Cool!” :) Big smile! He asked me WHY that was cool of course. lol I told him that’s about how far a marathon is, and *someday* I planned on running that far, and it just made it click in my head exactly how far it was, and I was just thinking about maybe trying it someday. (Not soon; can’t even finish 10 miles yet!) And he said that was crazy!! Now, thousands of people run marathons every year… How is that crazy??
I think he’s just saying these things are crazy because he doesn’t think I can do them, but I most certainly CAN and I plan on proving it to him. :) I am NOT crazy, but I do set high goals for myself, and I think I’m ambitious enough to accomplish them.

You are not crazy. Or at least if you are crazy, we are crazy together. While I doubt I can manage to fit marathon training into my schedule, I love running a lot, and plan to run 10 K next year. And I do want the same thing as you do: simply look in the mirror and nod ‘yes’ because I am at my best. I am also working on my upper body strength continously, because just like with you it’s my weak thing. And, to encourage you, I am starting to see definitive improvements in my upper body lately, after almost 6 month. So, never give up, never surrender! I think that ‘crazy’ here was just a tease, the same way my husband chuckled asking if I am going to kick his ass when I picked up my kickboxing DVD from the library for the first time.
LOL!! You sure he was kidding?
He’s probably scared! I asked for a boxing bag and pink gloves for Christmas last year… and didn’t get it. I think my hubby is afraid he’ll get his butt kicked if I get *too* tough! I was embarrassed that I couldn’t get him off me when were wrestling; I can only imagine how embarrassed he’d be if I were able to pin HIM!
Thanks for the encouragement Leida! I love having you in this thing with me!!
(Nice to have someone to be crazy with! lol)
ooooh I HATE that. When I first started running my husband gave me a ton of grief about it. Now I’m almost ready for a 5k, and I’m already talking about a 10k. The boys just need accept that when we want something, we’re gonna do it! I have started getting really nutty (maybe crazy) about healthy eating - like shopping organic and spending a little money on some really good liquid vitamin/mineral/antioxidant supplements. I asked him if it sounded like I’d drank the kool-aid yet. He said “well, I don’t know if you’ve taken a sip yet, but you’ve definitely got the straw in your hand.” I had to laugh. So maybe I’m not off the deep end yet.
In all my self defense classes, we learned how women are stronger than we are led to believe, and that the center of our strength is our hips and legs. My lower body is much, much stronger than my upper body too, and I definitely want to toughen up my upper body but also celebrate my kick-ass lower body
Hurray for the lower bodies!
Heh, my hubby was positevly kidding. He’s pretty happy about what I do. He’s kind of a guy who seems not to notice, not to notice… and then say something or give a tip that indicates that he paid very close attention all along. It’s kindda neat!
Hubby sounds great Leida!!
MJ- Thanks for sharing that info! I shouldn’t be surprised, cuz my legs have always been much stronger than my upper body, but I always attributed it to lots of running and very few push ups.
Good to know some of it is genetics! Still, I’d like it to be a *little* stronger.
I should probably write another blog about this, but it ties in with leg strength/size, so I’m just gonna put it here. (hopefully you’ll get to see it…)
Anyway, my sis in law is TINY (like model tiny, 5′8″ or so and maybe 105 lbs) but someone gave her a TON of jeans and they were too big for her, so she thought I might be able to wear them. They ranged in size from 0 to 5, so some of them I was able to keep, but OMG I held up some of the smaller 3’s and ESPECIALLY the 0’s, and they were SO TINY! Just for laughs, I tried a pair on to see how they’d look, and I COULD NOT EVEN GET MY LEG INTO THEM. Literally, maybe up to the knee, then no further! LMAO After I thought about it, I was like, “I will NEVER be that size.” I definitely have some fat to shed, but little to none of it is in my legs. They’re muscular. If I have to starve that muscle off to be a 3, then I’ll stay a 5.
Or maybe I’ll just find a brand that will fit a small waist and muscular legs, which is what I hope to have….
I think you are determined but one thing struck me.. it sounds to me you wquate weight loss with strength. You want to me muscular and strong (I think cause of your goals) so try to put the number out of your head. You and me both are that way I know the pot calling the kettle black here.
it osunds to me you want to tone and become strong.. more so than loose pounds. correct me if I am wrong. so let us both focus on working out and becoming fit and muscular.. I know we have no real way to gage it and maybe that is why pounds come in not sure. okay I am babbling.. sorry.. that is just sort of what struck me..
You’re right Kerstin.
I would rather be the shape and have the muscle tone I want than weigh a certain amount. I won’t sacrifice muscle tissue to see a certain number on the scale, and when/if I hit that plateau where I’m seeing increases in athletic ability but no losses on the scale, I can be satisfied with that.
But I’m not there yet… As of right now, I’m seeing gains in ability and losses on the scale, so that’s obviously a sign that I have excess weight/fat that needs to GO!!
well that makes sense..
you are so determined wish you and I would live closer I think we would push each other until we drop LOL
That’s a good thing!
It definitely would be nice to have a running partner!!! Oh well, we can cyber motivate each other.
Oh hon! I just don’t have time to read any blogs.
Just running by hear to show you love and say hi Shaina!
Shaina…you are so funny! I love your blog! You and me need to figure out how to conquer the yo-yo thing….and to think I don’t even diet! I need to tell myself that I deserve a new pair of jeans or something instead of a donut!
I hear you about the marathon thing….I am just getting started on running again (used to run in HS) and my husband is all over my case asking me WHY do I feel the need to run a marathon in a few years!!!! He thinks it’s stupid and a waste of time and energy. He just does NOT get it!! So I stopped explaining myself and will try to find more support here online in that area.
As for the upper body…I just started the 100 push up challenge last week to help increase my upper body strength. After the 6 weeks I will be back aty Bally’s and incorporating free weights to build muscle and continue with a push-up routine to build the endurance part. I am hoping it helps because like you I can get my husband off me with my legs but can’t budge him with my upper body at all!
Take care dear!
