When To Get Rid Of Over-Sized Clothes??

I have several cute dressy outfits that I bought when I started feeling “small” and they’re now way too big. The pants barely stay up and are way too baggy in the butt and hips even with a belt, and the shirts, well… They didn’t show cleavage when I bought them, but now a couple of them have to constantly be pulled on to keep the bra from peeking out!  :o  I know I need to get rid of them, but the shirts are mediums and the pants are size 8’s.  Not “big” at all… And I keep thinking, if I gain of couple of lbs back over the holidays, I could very well be back to fitting them again.  I guess I’m afraid to give them away, because I’m paranoid I’ll gain weight and won’t have anything cute to wear. And with money being kinda tight right now, I guess I’m worried about it more, because I know I won’t be able to just rush out and buy cute new clothes, ESPECIALLY after having just given stuff away.  (Kind of a make your bed, you lie in it kinda thing…)

So what do you guys do??  Do you give away the clothes as soon as they’re too big?  When they start looking really bad on you??  Or do you hang on to things way too long (like me) in a paranoid type way, afraid you’ll “get fat” again??  I think I might just go ahead and get rid of them, and use it as motivation to stay thin through the holidays…. *deep breath* It’s a scary thought though!

Funny I have been struggling with this same issue. I have 3 bags of clothes in my kitchen that I can’t decide to just give to goodwill or to put in the attic just in case.

I keep the +- 2 sizes clothes (in other words, I am size 4 to 6 now, so I keep sz 8 through sz 2 on hand).

If my mom is benevolent when she comes to visit she can take in some of the seams, so it fits. If you are handy with a sewing machine, making smaller sizes from bigger ones is far easier than the other way around. At least that’s what my mom tells me, I am too lazy to brush up on my sewing, haven’t done it since moving out! I really *should* though, life would be far easier, since I (like the most women) do not have the ‘exact’ figure by the charts.

My mom also says that classics doesn’t go out of style and should be kept till it shows wear.

And I keep favorite outfits no matter what (I am so glad now I didn’t give away my fav small outfits after I decided that I’ll never will be able to lose my pg weight!)

I kept soem jackets and sweaters but got rid of the rest. I figured I weigh myself often enought to catch myself..
NOW YOU WILL NOT GO BACK so get rid of them is my suggestion. but if you cannot do it then vaccuum seal them in one of those bags..
You need to have confidence Shaina you will not go back. You are to dedicated.. it is your old self creeping up I think..

Personally I always get rid of what I can no longer wear. :) I look at it like this, I am helping someone that may be in need of clothing and I know that what comes around goes around not only for bad things, but for good things as well. You always receive what you give…kindness returns kindness, evil returns evil. If you never want to see those size clothes on your body again, I say get rid of them and use it for the motivation to keep yourself from going back. :) Have a wonderful day and GOOD LUCK!!! :)

Leida… OMG I can NOT sew! I grew up thinking I’d never get married OR have kids, thinking I’d finish college and become some busy professional woman… LMAO… Just because nothing could be further from the truth! Dropped out of college, got married, had kids… Became a freakin stay at home mom! And love it to death… But I never learned how to cook or sew or anything else like that. It’s not too late, but I certainly don’t know anyone who could teach me, as both my mother and grandmother are like me, not great cooks or “domestic” type women! lol I suppose it’s possible to teach myself… But I wonder if my clothes would wind up looking too terrible to wear in public anyway! :D They are definitely “classic” type clothes; grey pin striped pants, sweaters, button down shirts, black dress pants; they’d be worth saving or having tailored, but it also wouldn’t hurt my feelings to give them to someone else who maybe couldn’t afford to buy them new. I don’t know…. Well, sweaters can’t really be tailored, can they? Prob. just the pants…

And Kerstin; You are too right! I’m worrying myself sick over this, and probably all for nothing, because I also weigh myself almost daily and catch the gains before they get too bad. I’m just wondering if the winter comfort foods and warm family gatherings won’t melt some of my resolve! I hope not!!

Thanks soonergirl!! :) I agree that kindness returns kindness; I suppose it would be good karma to give away some nice things. Who knows? Maybe I’ll hit some consignment shops and find some awesome things in my current size!

Don’t think like that. YOU CAN HAVE comfort food just like you have done in the past moderation my friend and work your buns off which I know you do.. Do not worry you are so dedicated and will not falter..
And getting rid of them clothes will just help you to stay on track cause what are you going to wear..?????

I suppose it’s possible to teach myself… But I wonder if my clothes would wind up looking too terrible to wear in public anyway!

So, you were going to get rid of it anyway. Why not use them to learn stuff, if you really want to :) And to quote another of mom’s wisdoms, “when you want to learn to sew or knit, don’t start with stupid samples. Make something you are going to wear”.

That’s obviously if you want to give it a try. If you don’t, don’t worry about it! :)

Heh, my mom grew in the reality where a professional women had to sew, if she wanted to look any good, since not much was available in the stores that made anyone look decent.

I get rid of them once they are that big because I am never going back. Having them around I think makes me know if I have a bad weekend or whatever I can go back to my old standbys…

  10. 8crazyemotions @ October 8th, 2009

I think you should get rid of them! Don’t even give your mind that option of going back!!! Your doing great!!!

  11. astrongnewme @ October 8th, 2009

Keeping clothes that are too big as a safety net in case you gain weight just seems to give a green light to go ahead and gain weight. I personally would get rid of them and use that as motivation to not gain weight, or else I’d have to run around naked! :)

Its weird my clothes are all really baggy everywhere except in the middle lol. I am waiting for the middle to start getting smaller.

I have no idea what I am going to do when I start getting too small for my clothes but Im alot like you in that way I hate getting rid of nice stuff, especially when I might wear it again…

I am a keeper of clothes. I probably shouldnt because keeping bigger clothes makes me think inside my head it may be ok to get back into those. BUT somehow i do think its a good idea to keep them just not in your closet…maybe in a storage bin or sumthin
